Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy is the brainchild of Gordon Nicolson, a man who knows more than most about the art of crafting tartan. The esteemed kiltmaker has been plying his trade for over 30 years from his flagship store on the Royal Mile. In recent years, Nicolson Kiltmakers has been instrumental in establishing Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy. Following 16 weeks of intensive study and hands-on experience, graduates of the course will walk away with the highest level of training experience in kiltmaking. After learning about the different styles and weights of tartan, students will delve into the art of hand-stitching and will discover what it takes to craft the perfect kilt, from selecting the number of pleats to lining it. The academy is also looking to offer an apprenticeship in kiltmaking, which would last for 18 months and be followed by the offer of work within the kiltmaking industry. For overseas students, an intensive two-week kiltmaking course covers all the basics, and is rewarded with an Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy Certificate. By taking this course, students can learn a practical skill and preserve the knowledge of traditional kiltmaking that has been passed down through generations.

Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy is a fantastic and unique course. My sister has just completed the 16 week, learning about the history of tartan and kilt, how to set up a kilt and how to make them! She said the staff were friendly, very helpful and extremely patient.
